Before the perfomances can happen, however, we must have actors and actresses. Between the 4 plays we need 9+ children (ages 8-12) and 10-15 adults (age does not matter we are all young enough to get on stage).

We invite anyone interested in acting to show up for auditions. Experience is not necessary. We look forward to seeing you at auditions and our performances.

Our final production of the 2009-2010 season is “Tut, Tut, Tutsy” directed by Laurie Carter. This is a fun, fast-paced murder mystery farce that will appeal to everyone!

Mortimer Tutley has just purchased a canopic jar that contains King Tut’s liver. When he receives a threatening note from King Tut demanding his liver back, he sends his lawyer, Bowsley, to hire a private detective to find out who really sent the note. Bowsley comes back with the PI’s two maiden aunts instead. Mavis and Maybelle Pepper aren’t exactly sure what they’ve gotten themselves into, but they’re game! During the course of their investigation, they also meet Mr. Tutley’s nurse, Adelaide; his cousin’s boy, Quincy who manages the day-to-day operations of Ooch Pooch Dog Food; Quincy’s sister, Etheljean, the actress who is obsessed with mounting a production of “Peter Pan” so she can play Tinkerbell; Paisley, Mr. Tutley’s niece, and her boyfriend Jarred; the housekeeper Mrs. Drayton; and Sonora and Lillian, two advertising interns who are really IRS agents. A couple of dead bodies turn up, but eventually the mystery is solved.

Returning to the Peninsula Players’ stage is Karl Johnson (Mortimer Tutley), Rita Smith (Adelaide), Sherry Owens (Maybelle), Ed Ahlers (Quincy), Tracy Roach (Etheljean), Madison Baker (Paisley), Michael Veland (Jarred), and Brandy Honcoop (Lillian). New to the Peninsula Players are Dennis DeSeranno (Bowsley), Wendi Peterson (Mavis), and Shalane Wellard (Sonora). This will be Diane DeSeranno’s first foray on stage – portraying Mrs. Drayton – but she has helped behind the scenes, most notably with “Steel Magnolias.”

The crew includes Sherry Ahlers (Producer extraordinaire!), Marlene Shepherd (costumes), George Power (sound and set), Lynda Layne (set painter – wait until you see her paintings!), Jay Shepherd (set), Scott Clardy (lights), and Jessey Kalz (Assistant to the Director).

Special thanks to Dean Mead who found a mummy for us!

The biggest challenge during Tutsy was casting. Not enough people auditioned. Personal phone calls were made. Cajoling and pleading worked wonders. And finally, FINALLY, the play was cast. Have you ever wanted to act out? Please consider trying out for any Peninsula Players production. We’re a fun bunch…just ask any of us! Maybe you want to be involved, but not on stage? We’re always looking for crewmembers and volunteers.

Come see “Tut, Tut, Tutsy” and find out what happens! The play opens Friday, May 21 and runs two weekends with three performances each weekend. Tickets are $10 and are available at Okie’s Thriftway in Ocean Park, Stormin’ Norman’s in Long Beach, and The Imperial Schooner in Ilwaco.

In early January in 2005 a group of individuals gathered at the Ocean Park Firehouse in answer to an ad placed by Wilma.. Wilma had placed an ad requesting anyone interested in acting contact her. Her idea was to prepare a self written skit to be presented to the senior citizens. That came about and was the first production of what now is know as the Peninsula Players.

There was some apprehension as to whether we should move forward with a continuing theater group. We decided to move forward. Wilma wasn’t too sure about the move, but appeared at our next meeting and on we went. As with any new venture, we needed money. Our group decided to have a variety show. Several talented individuals from the community participated, but no one can forget the song dance performed by Wilma and Marsha.

Our first main stage production was Deadwood Dick in which she played a saloon girl. Not only did she do a great job with her character, but recruited several for the saloon scene. Among those recruited was her beloved husband, Gary. What a fun pair they were. She went on to in the casts of Annie, Oklahoma and Give My Regards to Broadway.

Wilma loved to write and she often told us she had so many ideas for plays that sometimes she couldn’t sleep at night. She performed other original works at various venues. She entered some of her works in the Peninsula Players’ One Act festivals. Her final skit for us was a game show and a great time for our audiences.

She was a staunch supporter of the players and often lent her talent behind the scenes. She would sell tickets, greet theater goers and ask Gary to build something. Her loyal friend, Jeanine Miller, would tromp the peninsula putting up posters for upcoming productions. This was a job many of us did not want to do and her and Jeanine would volunteer.

When we would have special events like at the Port to advertise the players, you could depend on her and Jeanine come dressed in costume. They would move thorough the crowd with smiles on their faces and theater in their hearts. They were something to behold.

We will long remember the mother of our group and with great sadness that we say goodbye to Wilma Vardsveen. She will live in our hearts and minds for a long time to come. When we reach our reward, I am sure we will either see her at the thrift shop or performing on the stages in heaven. Wilma, we salute you.

Wilma was a creative force of nature. She would ask her friends to participate in skits, involving us in wierd costumes and dialogues, and parade us around the Sr. Center and other venues.

She wrote plays and skits. Her “backyard gossipers” series was only two plays – one-acts – performed at Peninsula Players One Act Festival in 2007 and 2008 – but they were a hoot. Again, her friends became her absurd buddies and performed in these plays. It was very difficult to say “No” to Wilma!

She involved her husband, Gary, in her skits as well. I remember one in particular where she and Gary were early patriots – Abe Lincoln and Mary – if I remember correctly. She wrote the dialogue, did the costuming, set up the set, and pulled it all off very well. This one was performed at the Sr. Center to the amusement of dozens of people.

Wilma and Jeanine Miller were fast friends, going to the Art Walks in Ilwaco on a regular basis. I accompanied them once – and only once – because they would stay in each store FOREVER – I was done in 3 minutes! Wilma was also very fond of garage sales and second-hand stores and was a regular customer at many around the area. She could take a bit of something and turn it into a wonderful hat or shawl or scarf. Her colorful outfits were such a part of her being.

Wilma was a rare woman and artist and will be missed by so many of her friends, me included.
