Something new has been added to this month’s Improv Night at the 2nd Story Playhouse in Ilwaco. Mike Bradberry, a 15-year member of the Screen Actors’ Guild in New York, will be “setting the stage” for a continuing free acting class, sponsored by the Peninsula Players.

“We’ll determine when and how often we’ll meet after we see who is interested in attending the class,” said Bradberry. “It may be one evening a week, or Saturday afternoons, or some other time.”

Improv Night, hosted by Karl Johnson, is normally held the third Saturday of the month, unless there’s a performance happening that night. This month’s Improv, plus activities with Mike Bradberry, will be on January 16, from 7 to 9 p.m.
“We’ll call it ‘Intro to Acting,’” said Bradberry, “although those with some stage experience will certainly gain skills from participating.” As an example, he demonstrated how an actor holding a cup sometimes forgets there is supposed to be liquid inside the cup and unthinkingly flails it around while speaking.

“While Mike is offering the class free of charge, donations are always welcome to help pay for the heat, lights, and other utilities,” said Janis Hoover, President of the Peninsula Players.

“Membership to the Players is not required to attend the class either, but a year’s membership to help support our community theater is just $10,” chimed in Membership Chairperson Rose Wallace.

The 2nd Story Playhouse is located at 108 Spruce Street in Ilwaco, on the corner above JT’s Café. For more information call 360-642-4932.

Get your voices warmed up and put your dancing shoes on for the upcoming Broadway Musical – Mame. Tryouts are scheduled scheduled for January 5th and 6th at the Second Story Playhouse at 7 pm. The cast will include some 20+ talented individuals. There are both singing and non-singing roles up for grabs.

You need not have anything prepared for the tryouts. We will be asking you to sing a bit from the title song and read a short passage from the dialogue. If you are unable to tryout at scheduled times, you may request a private tryout by calling Robert Lindberg at 665-0590.

There are ten males and ten females who have lines. The number of chorus members and dancers is unlimited. About half of the cast have solos and half have only dialogue. There are two roles for young boys. As you can see, there is a part for everyone.

The plot centers around a worldly aunt, who becomes a guardian for a young nephew and how this changes her life. Some of Mame’s wild adventurous spirit is inside everyone who lives for the moment and believes “life is a banquet”. Her life is turned upside down, but she still lives life to the fullest. The show takes place in the 1920′s will all the glamour and glitz of the time. Special songs include Mame, Open a New Window, If He Walked into my Life and We Need a Little Christmas.
